Dene Street Mixed use development

Three one-bedroom apartments and an extended shop within a Grade Two listed building in the town centre.

Within a south-facing rear yard, ad-hoc additions and historic clutter were replaced by a single-storey extension and a new building containing a lofty garden flat, its steeply pitched roof forming a generous tent-like living space. The redevelopment carefully restored and adjusted the existing interior to introduce natural light deep into the building, and give each dwelling access to external space.

Conservation issues were a priority, with the heart of the building an 18th-century timber frame. The new additions, timber-framed with green oak boarding and a stressed ply roof clad in stainless steel, take their scale from existing garden walls and roofscape to re-animate the space of the yard. The project was a commercial and conservation success.
